Removal Processes of Volcanic Ash Particles from the Atmosphere

چکیده
INTRODUCTION The use of satellite techniques provides valuable information for mapping ash hazards, as well as the means to study and predict the fates of volcanic clouds. We have used ultraviolet (TOMS – Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) and infrared (e.g., AVHRR – Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer; HIRS2 – High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder/2; GOES – Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite; MODIS – Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite sensors to examine the solid, liquid and gas species in numerous volcanic clouds over the past 25 years. Each sensor provides a somewhat different perspective of volcanic clouds, depending on their spatial, spectral and temporal resolutions. Thus, when combined these techniques provide important constraints on the interactions and fates of species within the clouds. Quantitative infrared techniques can provide information on how the size, size distribution, and total mass of fine ash particles evolve as a cloud mixes with the atmosphere. Here we present a review of past relevant observations and research, and the results of ongoing satellite studies.

15 During the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull on Iceland in April/May 2010, air traffic over Europe 16 was repeatedly interrupted because of volcanic ash in the atmosphere. This completely 17 unusual situation in Europe leads to the demand of improved crisis management, e.g. 18 European wide regulations of volcanic ash thresholds and improved forecasts of theses 19 thresholds. However, the quality...

[1] We present measurements of the whole scattering matrix as a function of the scattering angle at a wavelength of 632.8 nm in the scattering angle range 3 –174 of randomly oriented particles taken from seven samples of volcanic ashes corresponding to four different volcanic eruptions: the 18 May 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, the 1989–1990 Redoubt eruption, and the 18 August and 17 September...
متن کاملVolcanic particle aggregation in explosive eruption columns. Part I: Parameterization of the microphysics of hydrometeors and ash
The aggregation of volcanic ash particles within the eruption column of explosive eruptions has been observed at many volcanoes. It influences the residence time of ash in the atmosphere and the radiative properties of the umbrella cloud. However, the information on the processes leading to aggregate formation are still either lacking or very incomplete. We examine the fate of ash particles thr...
متن کاملAircraft observations and model simulations of concentration and particle size distribution in the Eyjafjallajökull volcanic ash cloud
The Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland emitted a cloud of ash into the atmosphere during April and May 2010. Over the UK the ash cloud was observed by the FAAM BAe146 Atmospheric Research Aircraft which was equipped with in-situ probes measuring the concentration of volcanic ash carried by particles of varying sizes. The UK Met Office Numerical Atmospheric-dispersion Modelling Environment (NAM...
متن کاملHail formation triggers rapid ash aggregation in volcanic plumes
During explosive eruptions, airborne particles collide and stick together, accelerating the fallout of volcanic ash and climate-forcing aerosols. This aggregation process remains a major source of uncertainty both in ash dispersal forecasting and interpretation of eruptions from the geological record. Here we illuminate the mechanisms and timescales of particle aggregation from a well-character...
